This breathtakingly beautiful region hosts the incredible steam train that chugs beautifully along the restored train tracks famously known as the Mary Valley Rattler. The train offers a 3 hour round trip from Gympie through to Dagun and onwards to Amamoor before turning on a turnstile and returning on the same track. Its a beautiful journey and a terrific way to get a glimpse of the green hills and farms of the region.

In the Curra region you now enjoy an effortless drive along the new section of the Bruce Highway where businesses include coffee plantations, rosella farms, chicken and egg farms, cattle producers and lovers of the quiet country life on acreage. Many have breathed fresh life into the Curra region since the new highway section opened.

Beyond Curra is Glenwood where many new acreages have opened up to those who prefer to live off-grid with neighbours nearby. The Glenwood community is tight knit and held strong by regular gatherings at the Glenwood community centre. Small local businesses include chiropractors, massage therapists, yoga instructors and mechanics. Many stop at the Glenwood servo for fuel as its right on the Bruce Highway.

As we drive towards the coast we enjoy dairy and beef cattle farms, state owned pine forestry and a fishermans paradise the lies languidly in Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach region.  Heading East from Gympie town you pass by local producers like dairy farms creating Heavenly bath milk and honey collectors sharing their golden goodness and Cooloola Berries growing strawberries and blueberries. As you drive into the sandy terrain of this region you'll enjoy the low growing eucalypt forests like no other. Its a beautiful one hour drive to the Tin Can Bay region where Inskip Point, Tin Can Bay and Rainbow Beach awaits. You will lose phone reception here near Inskip Point, which is perfect for a real break from life.

Inskip is great for off grid self contained beach-side camping and swimming in the gentle bay. Enjoy the sunset as you site by a fire on the beach. No major waves can be seen here so leave your surfboard for Rainbow Beach further up the road. There is not a lot going on business-wise at Inskip and thats the way we like it.

In Tin Can Bay businesses in this coastal spot cater to the tourist market, offering camping supplies and camping  accommodations, bed and breakfasts and easy to eat quintessential fish and chips and burgers at eateries and pubs. Tin Can Bay is famous for an incredible treat that involves swimming with and feeding dolphins. 

Rainbow Beach offers camping and 4WD action on the beach but be careful there is a treacherous pass when the ocean creeps up a little close to the rocks and takes out many 4WD vehicles as they attempt to pass the area. You'll see plenty of photographs of unsuccessful attempts! The coloured sands of Rainbow Beach are famous in Australia. Years ago as a child I visited the beach and with my lovely Mother we collected the various coloured sands into glass jars and took them home where they sat on display for many years. There are rules against doing this now sadly so you can't do that any longer. You can enjoy the rainbow painted stairs that take you down to the beach this Summer where you will enjoy a beautiful swim in the wild ocean or head in for a surf if the waves are just right. You can enjoy some great shopping at boutique hippy stores or at the monthly Rainbow Beach Market which is guaranteed to get you into the holiday vibe.
